University of Houston scholars win first place in national government finance competition

A team of three students from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Shidler College of Business recently won a national government case challenge, earning each member a $1,000 scholarship award. The team, consisting of You-Fan Chai, Manying Huang, and Alaina Rhoades, worked tirelessly for several months to analyze data for the city of Denver, Colorado. Their efforts culminated in the development of a “Citizen-Centric Report,” which they presented to the competition’s judges.

The competition provided a valuable learning experience for the students, challenging their skills in information gathering and analysis. Utilizing tools like Canva and CapCut, they made their report, presentation, and video visually appealing. Chai emphasized the importance of participating in competitions like this not just for the prize but for personal development through the learning experience.

Hosted by the National Association of Government Accountants (AGA), the Government Finance Case Challenge highlighted the significance of government accountability and transparency. It showcased how data can be transformed into information for citizens and promoted careers in government. The team’s success was under the guidance of UH Mānoa School of Accountancy Professor Jian Zhou and with special thanks to Pamela Young from the AGA—Hawaiʻi Chapter for her support throughout their journey.

Judges, who were government finance experts, evaluated submissions based on their merit and creativity. The UH Mānoa team was one of four finalists who presented their findings in a team-created video mocking a government meeting. This victory marks the third win in four years for a UH Mānoa team at either the graduate or undergraduate level, demonstrating their excellence in case competitions. You can view their report on the competition website.

The competition provided an excellent opportunity for these students to gain practical experience while also developing important skills that will benefit them throughout their careers in business or accounting.
