Visit from Science Author and Educator at Glenmont

Last week, students at Glenmont Elementary School were thrilled to have science author and educator Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen visit for two presentations. The presentations were customized to suit different grade levels, with younger students (K-2) learning about earthworm anatomy and the significance of revising in writing. In fact, the children had the chance to handle and observe live worms in containers during these interactive sessions, which sparked their curiosity about earthworm science.

Meanwhile, Dr. Wheeler-Toppen focused on nonfiction research for third through fifth-grade students. Using examples from her book, Dog and Cat Science Unleashed!, she demonstrated how a research cycle strategy can help guide information searches. This engaging session inspired the older students to view research as a fun and critical component of the writing process.

The success of this event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen, Glenmont Library Media Specialist Angela Datri, and the Glenmont PTA. Students and staff at Glenmont Elementary School were grateful for this valuable learning opportunity provided by an expert in science education and writing.
