Vanderbilt Welcomes Mark Byington as Head Coach: Former James Madison Coach Guides Dukes to Impressive 32-4 Season in 2023-24

On Monday, a whirlwind of coaching changes swept through the world of college basketball. First, Kyle Smith made the move from Virginia to Stanford. Next, Danny Sprinkle left his position at Ohio State to head to Washington. And finally, James Madison coach Mark Byington was hired by Vanderbilt. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed the news to CBS Sports.

Byington’s hire came quickly, just 18 hours after his James Madison team was defeated by Duke in the NCAA Tournament. Despite their loss, the Dukes had an impressive season, finishing with a 32-4 record and ranking 62nd at Their tournament run began with a notable victory over Wisconsin, marking their first NCAA tournament win since 1983. Byington played a key role in turning JMU into a strong mid-major program over the past four years, posting an impressive record of 82-36 and guiding them through a conference transition.

Vanderbilt’s decision to hire Byington signifies the end of the coaching carousel for high-major programs, as only Louisville, Oklahoma State and SMU still have vacant head coaching positions.
