Belle II Undergoes Major Upgrades to Prepare for Exciting Run 2 Data Collection

In summer 2022, the Belle II detector at SuperKEKB in Japan underwent a scheduled long shutdown. During this time, several upgrades were made to the facility to better handle the expected increases in luminosity and backgrounds originating from the beams. The new vertex detector with a fully implemented pixel detector was installed at the collision point, while enhancements were also made to the radiation shielding around the detector and other measures were put in place to improve data-collection performance.

The Belle II experiment first recorded collisions in March 2019, with the goal of uncovering new phenomena through precise analysis of the properties of B mesons and other particles produced by the SuperKEKB accelerator. The long-term aim of Belle II is to accumulate a dataset that is 50 times larger than that of its predecessor, the former Belle experiment. This ambitious goal will allow researchers to delve deeper into the mysteries of particle physics and potentially discover new physics beyond the Standard Model.

With these upgrades and improvements in place, researchers are now poised to collect high-quality data during Run 2 at Belle II. This successful start marks an important milestone in ongoing research efforts at the facility, bringing researchers one step closer to their ultimate goal of unlocking new secrets about our universe.
