A Student’s Guide to Using Artificial Intelligence Responsibly and Effectively

In Peru, the 2024 school year began with over 6 million students returning to classrooms. The start of academic activities marked a new beginning for education, as some students turned to technology to complete their tasks. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), students are increasingly turning to AI tools to aid them in their studies.

However, it is important for students to understand the correct use of AI tools. To help guide them on this topic, we interviewed Liliana Muñoz Guevara, director of the Comprehensive Basic Training Unit at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, and Omar Florez, an AI scientist.

Muñoz advises students not to be afraid to try new tools and use them wisely. She emphasizes that AI can facilitate personalized learning and deeper exploration of complex topics.

There are various AI tools available to students that can aid in academic tasks. Some examples include ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Wolfram Alpha. Perplexity is connected to the internet and provides accurate and up-to-date information, while Wolfram Alpha is an online tool for solving mathematical queries.

When using AI chatbots, it is crucial to verify the original source of data to ensure accuracy. It is also important for students not lose sight of the human aspect of learning when using technology.

Despite its potential limitations in disciplines requiring practical skills, AI can enhance academic performance in various areas like music and dance through generative AI tools. It is essential for educators and students alike consider ethical aspects when using AI in education.

Overall, while AI can be a powerful tool for enhancing student learning, it must be used wisely and ethically. By following these guidelines and keeping a balanced perspective on technology’s role in education, we can ensure that our students have access to a well-rounded education that prepares them for success both inside and outside the classroom.
